在偶然的機會下,我有幸從Michael Mokeeb的文章《First impression of a foreigner about Taiwan》裡讀到了Barlaam和Josaphat的故事:

Just as I know, in China, the majority of great literatures are biographies of holy people which also preserve the precious teachings about the enlightenment of mind. Some of them were married, some of them retreated in the desert. They struggled in every single moment and had their lives so wonderful! Few weeks ago, I had a fortune to read the article named 《First impression of a foreigner about Taiwan》by Micheal Mokeeb :

“…The answer can be found in the life of st. Joaseph. It is very interesting that his youth was very similar to Buddha’s one, almost the same. Joaseph’s father, Indian king Avenir protected him from any kind of sorrow, he did not let his son know anything about common people’s suffering: diseases, old age, death. St. Joaseph lived like in the paradise”. Even all his servants always were supposed to be young, healthy and beautiful. But once during a trip he has met a man with an awful disease, and after that a very old man. And his servants could! not hide the truth any more, they’ve told him about suffering, diseases, death. Joaseph has been totally distressed ad full of sorrow. He thought: oh, the whole this life is just a vanity, - and is there any other life beyond it? At that time the Lord has sent to him st. Varlaham, a monk form the wilderness. And he’s taught Joaseph Christianity, telling about Christ - the eternal life. Joaseph has received st. Varlaham’s preaching and has been baptized. Finally st. Joaseph has turned his father and all their people to Christianity. And after that he’s refused all earthly power, riches, fame and pleasure, turned over his kingdom one faithful servant, and has gone with st. Varlaham to the wilderness. He lived there till the rest of his life. And by means of ascetic monastic life in the wilderness he’s achieved the eternal life in the kingdom of heaven…”

This story made me aware of the preciousness of Christian Spirituality. I really want to know more about that:
How Varlaham guided Joaseph to practice the spirituality in desert?
Is it a process to go inward just as Siddhattha?
What teachings from the holy monks in desert were left for posterity?

  4. Ecclesiastes made Solomon and his conception of life known to us. May I know more about :

「Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; all is vanity.」(Ecclesiastes 12:8)
「the end of the matter; all hath been heard: fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole of man.」(Ecclesiastes 12:14)

Does it mean that only when we seriously keep the commandments, we could have spirituality and go on the way to Theosis ? If not, it would be impossible to achieve the purpose of life —- Theosis, in this regard, the preacher said “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity” ?

(Ecclesiastes 12:8)
(Ecclesiastes 12:14)

  5. no, has nothing to do with the commandments. theosis is a gift of god, not something that we ‘earn’ by good deeds. it is an action of the lover. the good deeds help us to accept the gift.

and , yes, you are very correct. if everything is Vanity of vanities, not only we can not have any theosis , we can not survive also. better to die.

we should understand the context of the Preacher. in Hebrew thought for the first time the problem of theodicy is examined. the preacher searching the meaning of life -for he first time - he finds that human life , AS IT IS, BASED ON HUMAN CONDITIONS ONLY, is vanity. but he can not find a solution. still believes in god, but he discovers the conflicts in life. as many centuries after , discovered the anxiety the existential philosophy in our days, the psychology, etc… their is solution, gradually appearing in Job book (to trust god) and finally and completely in Jesus Christ, specially that in the church we receive the Holy communion, the most valuable thing.

but let me point out, that even for non Christians, the power of love, can make life ultimate valuable, not vanity at all. the Preacher express a very narrow point of view. probably because in the end of his life he lose the grace of god, (he had thousands of women..). the pure love, the self sacrificing love can give us the inner witness that life is the most beautiful thing, even the death has some meaning, making life so unique. the life of a beautiful flower , specially given from love, even
the flower vanish so quickly,a simple smile or a tear, a kiss or some music, keep the universe alive .

  6. Does it mean that Holy Communion can trnasfer the temporal into the eternal, so everything in this temporal life becomes meaningful?

Does it mean that when we become Christians and receive the Holy Communion, our relationship with others will become eternal?

We receive the Holy Communion, and we become God’s body.
But many people don’t know God and don’t receive the Holy Communion, are they out of God’s body???

  7. yes. i would say makes the eternal to be now and here. and finally eternity is not a matter of time only. it is a matter of relationship.

time separates us. we count time from how separated we are. but eternity is an endless loving relationship, and this is established by the holy communion.

we count time from how separated we are。

for the people who do not receive, for the time being, they receive grace from us, from the liturgy. the Christian does not receive the holy communion only for himself. the holy communion is like the heat, which makes very hot the heater, but radiates also in the room and warms all the people.

we hope, and we pray at the second coming of Jesus, in the end of history, all people to want, to choose to receive the holy communion for ever
